Arcachon (Arcaishon in Gascon) is a part of the Gironde department in the south west of France. The area is renowned for its rough seas and is a popular spot for surfers. However Arcachon is a popular bathing location due to the flat, calm and safe inlet called le bassin d’Arcachon. Situated on the Atlantic coast 55 kilometres (34 mi) southwest of Bordeaux in the Landes forest, which stretches all the way down the coast to Hossegor. It has a fine beach and a mild climate. It is also a haven for flat water kitesurfers.

At its southern entrance from the Atlantic ocean, you will find Europe’s largest sanddune, Dune de Pyla (or du Pilat), the dune is spectacular and stands at over 100 meters high. You can hike up it, however it is important to stick to the path as it is part of France’s nature reserve and walking on the dune causes damage. Due to the natural elements the dune moves on average 5 meters per year in a easterly direction.

The Bordeaux and Gironde area of France is home to some of the best golf courses in Europe. Epic golf courses in the area include; Garden Golf de Margaus, Chateau des Vigiers, Golf de Bordeaux-Cameyrac, Golf du Medoc, Golf de Teynac, Golf de Bordeaux-Pessac, Golf de Lolivarie, Golf d’Arcachon, Golf de Biscarrosse and Golf d’Aquitaine.

Arcachon is known for the “Arcachonnaise”, the local name for a traditional house of the region, which is the architectural style of many of the older houses built there. It is a type of Victorian architecture, and was criticized for generations, but is now considered to be charming and appropriate for the region. Arcachon was born 150 years ago, after Emperor Napolean lll signed off it’s official birth certificate. Before 2 May 1857 it was just a forest of pine trees, oaks and strawberry trees (arbutus), with no road links, and home to fewer than 400 people, mostly fishermen and peasants.

In earlier years, when some hygienists began to recommend sea bathing, three sea establishments were laid out by some entrepreneurs especially for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie and other wealthy people. This was the beginning of a new lifestyle, and some of the locals got the opportunity to claim their independence from La Teste-de-Buch, which owned their properties, in order to found a “free” new town, Arcachon.
