About Bayonne

The fortified town of Bayonne is located to the North of the Basque coast, just a short drive from Biarritz Airport and 40 minutes from the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The city is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Saint Mary’s Cathedral. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Gothic style cathedral stands on the site of a Romanesque cathedral that was destroyed by a fire in 1258. The impressive building was constructed using local red & white stone.

You can learn all about the history of chocolate and watch the chocolatiers at work, at Bayonne’s L’Atelier de Chocolat. The guided tour of this renowned chocolate maker, takes you on a journey of chocolate production; from the collection of the cocoa beans, to the end product. A display of antique machinery demonstrates how cocoa beans were made into chocolate 100 years ago. The tour is completed with some chocolate tasting for the adults and chocolate painting for the little ones! Every May, the town holds a chocolate festival, where the streets are lined with Artisans demonstrating their skills.

At the end of July, Bayonne turns red and white for the Fetes de Bayonne. Five days and nights of partying are enjoyed by everyone. The Fete includes a grand Carnival parade, fireworks and the World Championships of the Omlette de Piments, where people try their luck at producing the best omelette using the famous Espelette Peppers.

If you fancy a day trip whilst on your trip, Sea-Lifts can offer a transfer over to one the neighbouring towns, such as St Jean de Luz, Hendaye or Bayonne’s twin town, San Sebastian. Contact us for a quote and to make a booking.
