Capreton is the oldest harbor in Les Landes and during the middle ages the ‘Capbretonnais’ harpooned whales, which can still be found all over the golf of Gascogne.
Every Christmas eve a huge pile of wood was set on fire “La Torelle” between the Church and the Marie. This was a tradition that dates back to an event that happened late one evening in the year 930. Norman looters sailed close to Capbreton but the Capbretonnais sat and danced around the fire with sticks. The shadows looked like a big group of powerful folk and therefore the Normans bypassed Capbreton and went straight into Bayonne to cause havoc.
Capbreton was frequented by Henry lV and also Napoleen lll.
Just South of Capbreton lies a small Vineyard ‘Vin de Sable’. It is famous due to the grapes growing on the sand dunes and is a popular destination for tourists and wine tasters.
Capbreton is famous for it’s excellent surfing conditions. There are man beaches to suit all surfers.
