Praia do Guincho

Located 5km’s north-west of Cascais town, Guincho is a stunning 1km beach and great for beginners and intermediates to refine their skills. An exposed beach break with reliable surf, Guincho produces good waves any time of the year but is best experienced when the swell angle is from the west or north-west.

Praia das Macas

A reliable spot that works all year round, Praia das Macas is an exposed beach breach that offers both left and right-handed waves. Best experienced from the east south-east with a swell from the northwest, Macas can become crowded with the surf is good.

Praia Grande

An exposed beach break that is suitable for beginners, Praia Grande is great at any time of the year. Surfable at all stages of the tide, this spot is best experienced with a swell from the northwest. Producing both lefts and rights, it can sometimes get crowded when it works.

Monte Estoril

Located a few hundred metres east of Cascais, Monte Estoril is a fairly exposed reef and jetty break. Best experienced around high tide when the wind direction is from the north and with a swell from the southwest, this spot has both lefts and rights. Even when it’s working, this spot is rarely crowded and there is a car park at its base giving convenient access.

When is the best time to surf in Cascais

One of the most spectacular coastlines in Portugal, Cascais offers consistent surf all year round. With temperatures rarely dropping below 16C in winter, it’s the perfect location for a surf holiday.

Beginners will find the surf conditions are at their best between May and September. With temperatures between 25C-30C, the water is warm, with waves nice and mellow. You will find most surf school will be busy during this period.

Whilst there is no bad time for Intermediate surfers to visit Cascais, they will find the conditions most favourable in May, June and September. Although not as intimidating as in the winter months, the waves have enough power to help challenge and develop surfing ability.

The best time of year for advanced surfers to visit Cascais for a surfing holiday is from September to March, with the best month generally being November. Avoiding the summer tides, with their mellow surf, and the tourist crowds, the winter months produce powerful conditions which will test a surfer’s ability.
