It has a marina, 16thcentury fortress and an attractive old town. There’s a daily fish market in the harbour and the Museu do Mar, retells Cascais fishing history. The Castro Guimaraes Museum with over 25,000 books is located in the municipal park. Cascais is a good base for exploring Estoril, Belem and Lisbon to the east and the fairytale palaces of Sintra to the north.
There are three sandy beaches in the town – Praia da Ribeira; Praia da Rainha and Praia da Conceicao. Neighbouring Estril has more water sports facilities at Praia do Tamariz, which has a salt-water swimming pool. The Surfers paradise, Praia da Guincho is 9km away, set among the stunning scenery of the Serra de Sintra Natural Park, although strong currents mean swimming here can be dangerous.

Cascais has been a holiday destination since the 19th Century when King Fernando II proclaimed it as his favourite place for a summer retreat. The influx of wealth earned Cascais the nickname “the town of Kings and fishes”. Today Lisbon’s wealthy have beach homes in the town.
