Things to do in St Jean Pied de Port

There is much to see and do in St Jean Pied de Port.

As you enter through the Porte St Jaques, the 15th century cobbled street called Rue de la Citadelle runs down the hill, over the river to the Porte d’Espagne. The street is lined with café’s, local craft and produce shops and galleries.

Take a look over the bridge and see the beautiful old houses with balconies overlooking the River Nive. Many of the buildings are very old, of pink and grey schist, and retain distinctive features, including inscriptions over their doors. There is an old bakery that still lists the price of wheat from 1789. At the top of the hill is the citadel. Vauban remodelled this in the 17th century.

The new town is outside the city walls, here you find the Hotel de Ville and marketplace.

History of St Jean Pied de Port

Originally Saint Jean Pied de Port was near Saint Jean le Vieux but it was flattened in 1177 by Richard the Lionheart’s army. Not long afterwards the King of Navarre rebuilt the town where it is situated today.

St Jean was once a part of the Spanish Basque province of Navarre. The Basque language is still heard in both France and Spain, which share many Basque traditions such as the food and the architecture.

St Jean Pied de Port marks an important point of the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, the town stands at the base of the Roncevaux Pass. The name Pied de Port literally translates to ‘foot of the pass’. The pilgrimage routes from Paris, Vezelay and Puy-en-Velay meet in the town itself and is the final rest point before the difficult hike through the Pyrenean mountain range.

St Jean Pied de Port is a walled town and it’s gate, Porte St Jaques, is now one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
